The Sergeant Lee Davidson Memorial Football Cup

The Sergeant Lee Davidson Memorial Football Cup

Thorne Colliery FC V The Light Dragoons. Held at The Welfare Ground, Grange Road Moorends, THORN.

SSM Kieth Bell reports Thanks to the support from HHQ which helped us make the event such a huge hit with everyone who attended. It was a great turn-out by the Regiment past and present as well as the local public who turned out in their masses. People could not speak highly enough for what the regiment has done for Sergeant Davidson’s family since their terrible loss.

Although we were beaten 6-2 this did not detract from the real meaning of the day. We also raised a large sum for the Appeal and the same for Scotty’s Little Soldiers. The Aim was well achieved.

North V South Veteran Cricket at The Village of Wilcot Wiltshire 30th June

A brief report and a small selection of photographs

Cricket was great fun and enhanced by beautiful weather. Martin Forsyth's 'South' team won by 4 wickets. North could have won if they hadn't dropped all their catches! Will eventually get round to writing a short report on the day, but a bit snowed under at present. Lots of photos taken. I will try to forward the ones taken by Andy Mackie. There was also a 'photo-book' produced. To see that go to blurb.co.uk then enter 'hoppo' in the search bar at the top, then scroll down to the OBCC book. You can preview or buy the book or order individual photos by e-mailing info@charliehopkinson.com.

A Message from the Commanding Officer

A Message from the Commanding Officer

I write as the Regiment deploys back to Afghanistan on Op HERRICK 16.
It is a fascinating time to be deploying, we are well trained and equipped and our conceptual understanding of the challenges that we face is exceptionally well developed.

The Light Dragoons will fill numerous and varied tasks on the forthcoming deployment. We have two Squadrons deploying in role, we have soldiers supporting the Afghan Police, we are contributing significantly to HQ task Force Helmand, and we will be sustained by our own HQ Sqn Never to be forgotten, C Sqn forms the heart of the Rear Ops Group, remaining in Swanton Morley.

They too face significant challenges over the next 6 months. The campaign progresses well but Afghanistan remains a very dangerous place. It is in view of this that my thoughts naturally turn to the Light Dragoon's Colonel's Appeal Fund and how critical it is that we continue to drive hard towards our intended target of £1,000,000 in order to support every Light Dragoon that deploys to Afghanistan and supports those in theatre. The inherent uncertainties that surround each operational deployment are reduced hugely in the knowledge that support is present and is guaranteed to be used where it is most needed.

The Auction Items Will Now Be Advertised At Regional Events And On The Monthly Fliers, and No Longer on the Shop Site.

For More Information please contact HHQ 01912393141.

Kilimanjaro trek

'I cant say that to climb Mount Kilimanjaro has always been on my to do list but the desire to do something special in my 60th year was nagging at me and Kilimanjaro is a challenge and I could use it to raise some money for the Colonels Appeal so I got on with it.

I started training in June and booked the climb in Jul, after I had seen how the training was going, the plan was to start walking in Sept. Three 2 hour gym sessions a week then climbing or walking on another 2 days was a blast from the past that my body had forgotten, but it was all worth it in the end, I have a certificate that says that I made it to Uhuru Peak at 0800hrs on 29-Sept 2011.

Did it live up to its reputation? Very much. Was it hard? Yes. Was it enjoyable? Without a doubt. Will I do anything else? Yes planning is under way for next years trek, any one fancy the Atlas Mountains in Sept?

Thanks to all who donated to the appeal we will keep the Virgin Money Giving Paul Milnes page open for another month as we are still getting money in so no excuse if you still want to contribute, I think wearing the regimental tie during the night assault on the final peak deserves another round of giving anyway. Is this a new record for the highest point that the regimental tie has been worn? Can we throw down a challenge to see if a regimental tie can be worn on land higher than 5895m during 2012.'
